Letters from the Front
“We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.” And with that quotation from famed American astronomer and scientist Carl Sagan, we launched The Prudent Speculator Tech Value Report (TVR) 22 months ago. Probably not fair to say “we” as this newsletter is really the work of our Senior Analyst and tech wiz, Mark Mowrey. Now it is true that yours truly approves all of the stocks that are recommended in this publication as the same value-based research conducted for our flagship publication, The Prudent Speculator, is utilized in TVR. And I retain the title of Value Editor as I do contribute a bit of prose now and then, but Mark pens nearly every word that appears in the monthly newsletter and weekly Hotline updates, drawing on his years of experience covering technology for cutting-edge pubs Industry Standard and Red Herring.
TVR is similar in design to The Prudent Speculator, though it differs in several distinct ways. First, in celebration of the technologies it covers, the basic presentation of the report is denser in content. Technology coverage often requires a tremendous amount of ‘glossing,’ whereby elements in the story are described in common terms easily understood by the reader. Second, the report makes greater use of graphics to portray industry- and company-specific trends. In fact, TVR includes two sections—Graphic Detail and Databank—dedicated to the visual display of data. Finally, TVR is easy to use, as those seeking to build a complete tech portfolio can choose to follow the diversified 25-stock Buckingham TechValue Portfolio while those seeking one new investment idea each month can keep up with the Mowrey Portfolio Compiler.
I think anyone the least bit interested in tech will find Mark's thoughts very enlightening and, equally important to many Buckingham Report readers, TVR is perhaps the only publication that combines technology and value. Lots of tech-savvy journalists can talk the talk about the technologies themselves, but TVR actually provides actionable investment advice based on the time-tested methodologies of The Prudent Speculator. And putting our money where our mouths are, both Mark and I invest right along side TVR subscribers, though with the usual several-day delay in making our purchases so readers may have first crack at the new recommendations.
Mark has just returned from the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and I wanted to give those unfamiliar with TVR a taste of what they have been missing. Clicking on the thumbnails below will reveal the daily missives Mark posted from CES, covering everything from the keynote speech by Bill Gates to Apple's MacWorld introduction of the iPhone to wireless communications issues addressed by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin.
